Comfort
The KEEN Targhee IV WP provides a wide, roomy fit for optimal comfort and a more natural toe splay as you hike. While they aren’t ideal for those with narrow feet, most moderate to wide-foot hikers will appreciate the extra space. Trying these boots on in person is recommended, as the sizing isn’t always on point, and they tend to run a little big. They have essentially no break-in period and are comfortable right out of the box. We did not get pressure points, hotspots, or blisters while wearing these boots, even on extended or multi-day hikes. The cushioned midsole isn’t overbearing and gives the comfort needed for all-day hikes and backpacking.
Durability
KEEN has made durability a hallmark of the Targhee IV by incorporating its KEEN.FUSION technology into the design. This bonds the upper to the sole without using glue to prevent the most common failure point in hiking boots: delamination. During testing, we found these boots held up well on rocky and muddy trails and have yet to show signs of material breakdowns after months of use. The Targhee IV offers moderate ankle support. It doesn’t have a very high or stiff ankle collar like heavy-duty hiking boots, but it does well for a midweight boot. While hiking, even with a pack, we found these boots offered just enough lateral support to feel comfortable and keep our ankles secure. The flexible upper and lower ankle coverage allows for more flexibility and feels less restrictive, which could be advantageous depending on the person. The Targhee IV strikes a balance of mobility and support.
Traction
Multi-directional lugs on the outsole of the Targhee IV truly shine on steep inclines or slippery rock surfaces. From dry, rocky trails to wet, muddy outings, these boots deliver impressive grip and stability. Even when making quick directional changes, we felt stable and sure in our footing with minimal slips or missteps. We took slightly more caution due to less ankle support, but overall, we found the traction highly versatile and reliable.
Weather Resistance
The KEEN Targhee IV is ideal for shoulder season hiking and moderate weather conditions. The KEEN. Dry waterproof membrane is effective in various weather conditions but does best in mild to cool climates. These boots kept our feet dry during rainy day outings and shallow river crossings, but they do have some limitations with prolonged exposure to moisture. During warm weather hikes, we noticed they are not very breathable but also lack insulation for cold weather, which is why they’re preferable for shoulder seasons or more mild climates.

The Targhee IV is a midweight boot and weighs around 2 lbs. 2.6 oz. per pair, depending on the size. It’s a good option for longer treks, backpacking, and day hikes. The weight is well-balanced, and the boots offer a good level of cushion and support without feeling clunky on the trail. Even on steep climbs or descents, the weight was not noticeable.

It doesn’t necessarily excel in extreme conditions, but it is a good fit for most hikers who like to get out in shoulder season or bag peaks in the summer.
