Bottom Line

The Kelty Tru.Comfort Doublewide 20 redefines cozy camping for two. It offers a spacious and thoughtfully designed sleeping bag for couples and pairs – or just a night with your dog – without the premium price tag. The Doublewide is one of only two double sleeping bags to make the cut on our best sleeping bags for camping guide thanks to its functional feature set, huge size, and smart zipper system for easy in and out. Gear Analyst Ian Krammer put this one through the wringer on dozens of camping trips in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah with his dog.

There’s a lot to love about this bag. There are two soft blankets sewn into each side of the bag for an extra layer of insulation on cool nights. An oversized hood fits two full-size pillows. Wrap-around zippers give excellent ventilation for your feet. Plus, it costs less than two synthetic bags, making the Doublewide 20 an impressive balance of comfort and value for summer camping trips.

But it’s not perfect. This model struggled to keep us warm below 45°F, so we don’t recommend it for colder trips. Its U-shaped zipper can be a bit tricky to navigate in the dark. The internal fabric is nice, but can be a bit slippery and noisy. And, keep in mind this is a double bag, so it’s heavier and bulkier than most on our list. But if you’re looking for a reliable, comfy, and shareable sleeping bag, the Kelty Doublewide 20 is an awesome budget-friendly option for two.

Comfort

The Kelty Tru.Comfort Doublewide 20 is a haven for pairs who like sharing space. It’s wider than a Queen mattress, so there’s room to spare for restless sleepers and starfish sprawlers. Gear Analyst Ian Krammer tends to sleep on his side and stomach, while his dog shifts and turn around in the night, but he finds there’s always enough room for both to move without waking the other.

We love the two integrated blankets made of thick, cushy polyester that’s sewn into each side of the bag. This design makes it easy for each sleeper to adjust warmth, and the blanket stuffs easily into the side of the bag when not in use. While they aren’t removable for cleaning, we like that they’re easy to flip on and off. A toggle on the bottom corner keeps them battened down around your feet on cooler nights. The massive, oversized hood easily accommodates two full-size pillows side by side, making the Doublewide 20 feel more like a bed than a bag.

We had some issues with the fabric, though. The polyester taffeta lining is smooth, but this material isn’t for everyone. It feels a bit slippery compared to the competition. This fabric also tends to catch on the U-shaped zipper easily, which can make adjustments and getting in and out of the bag a bit of a process, especially in the middle of the night.

The blankets aren’t wide enough to cover an average-sized adult, coming up a bit short on the sides. This leaves a gap between people that can feel drafty. Still, these are small issues. We reach for this bag all summer when we want a reliable night of sleep next to a partner, and we think you’ll find it impressively cozy too.

Warmth

The Doublewide 20 shines on summer nights. The top layer can be zipped up fully to retain both people’s body heat, and two integrated blankets add an extra layer of warmth. On warm nights, the U-shaped zippers are excellent for dumping heat. When that game of footsie gets a little too hot, each person can unzip the right amount to cool down and stick a foot out – exactly the level of customization we look for in a double bag.

The oversized hood traps heat efficiently. Ian’s also slept in this bag through very damp nights, where it performs well. Although the bag can absorb water from heavy condensation, we were impressed at how effectively Kelty’s synthetic insulation kept us warm, and it dries fast – usually within just a couple of hours.

But, our testing finds it falls a bit short for cold weather camping. Kelty claims a 20°F temperature rating, but we think that’s optimistic. We wouldn’t take it below 45°F. The insulation isn’t especially lofty, and the bag doesn’t fit snugly around your body to trap warmth. Ian used the Doublewide 20 in temperatures in the low to mid 30’s. Even with two people and a dog and paired with a high R-Value pad, it felt drafty and cold. Save the Doublewide 20 for summer months instead.

Packed Size

The Doublewide 20 is true to its name – at 1 foot by nearly 2 feet, it’s bigger than most single sleeping bags when packed. This thing is one of the heaviest on our list as well, weighing 9 pounds and 8 ounces. The thick shell, added blankets, huge hood and synthetic insulation are bulky, so it earns a lower score for packed size.

But, don’t let that turn you off the Doublewide 20. Keep in mind this model is for two people, and in practice, we don’t find its size overwhelming. Overall, our testers think it’s easier to carry one larger package than two separate sleeping bags. We also appreciate the simple, massive stuff sack – its slight stretch and generous space make the Doublewide 20 easy to stuff away.

Features

The Kelty Tru.Comfort Doublewide 20 offers thoughtful features that make it a cozy choice for couples. The oversized hood keeps two full-sized pillows in place and the dual-blanket design is lovely for a bit of extra comfort. Ian loves that the top is removable, too, so on especially hot nights you can take it off for a lighter, airier sleep, or use the top as a blanket when hanging out around the campfire. If it gets wet, or the bag needs to be aired out, there are gear loops to hang the bag from a clothesline.

Although that’s it for features. The Doublewide 20 doesn’t have luxurious elements that we often see in more premium bags – for example, there’s no pockets to corral small essentials like a headlamp, phone, or chapstick. The hood lacks a cinch cord to tighten up the headspace on cooler evenings. And, this model doesn’t have a pad sleeve to prevent the bag from slipping around on a sleeping mattress. But, we still love it – when you need a good value for two, the Doublewide hits the sweet spot.

Should You Buy The Kelty Tru.Comfort Doublewide 20?

The Kelty Tru.Comfort Doublewide 20 is a comfortable and convenient bag for couples, families, and dog owners sharing a night under the stars. Its roomy design gives both sleepers plenty of space to sprawl out without disturbing each other. The oversized hood is big-pillow compatible, and the blanket system is helpful for controlling individual warmth – perfect for customizable heat. Wrap-around zippers allow you to stick a foot out on each side, and the top layer can be entirely removed for use as a blanket around the fire – or just a cooler night of sleep. Plus, if you’re on a budget, this one is a very reasonable price for its quality and features – it costs the same, or less, than two separate bags, making it an excellent value

However, we don’t recommend the Doublewide 20 for those with limited storage. Its bulky packed size and hefty weight make it a challenge for folks limited on trunk and gear storage. We find the liner fabric is a bit slippery, and the blankets aren’t quite wide enough for full coverage. Additionally, we wouldn’t take this bag on overnights below 45°F, as it’s not quite insulated or warm enough. The liner fabric is a bit slippery, which might not work for everyone, and it doesn’t have extra features like pockets.

That said, none of these issues are dealbreakers. When it comes to a simple, comfy, and affordable joint sleeping setup for summer nights in a vehicle or tent, the Tru.Comfort Doublewide 10 is one of our faves.

What Other Camping Sleeping Bags Should You Consider?

The Kelty Tru.Comfort Doublewide 20 is one of two double sleeping bags to make it onto our guide to the best camping sleeping bags. That said, some single bags can be zipped together to create the same cozy shared sleeping experience. Check out these alternatives:

NEMO Jazz 30 Double Review – The NEMO Jazz 30 Double is the other double bag on our list. It has more features and also includes a cozy blanket – although this one is removable for washing. It has pockets, a cozier material, pad sleeves, and considerably more loft. However, the Jazz is much pricier.

REI Siesta Hooded 20 Review – The REI Siesta Hooded 20 is another great option that shares the Doublewide 20’s oversized hood, simple design, and smart zipper system. We prefer the single version of this one, but it also comes in a double version for a cushy, bed-like night under the stars.

The North Face Wawona 20 Review – We also love the Wawona 20 for its similarly cushy interior and plentiful room that make for a very comfortable rest. This one’s a single sleeping bag, but two can be zipped together to create a double. It’s just as cozy and more budget-friendly – although it doesn’t have a hood.
