The Zpacks Arc Haul Ultra 60 excels as an ultralight backpack for long trips. Its main strengths are an exceptionally stable carry and long-term durability. During our rigorous testing in the Rocky Mountains and in a controlled environment, we were impressed by its unique suspension system, ample pocket space, and reliable water resistance.

The Arc Haul Ultra is named after its innovative curved carbon fiber frame, which allows for good ventilation and stable weight distribution. The pack’s roomy pockets and exterior attachment points provide efficient gear organization and access. Its durable Ultra fabric with laminated waterproof backing will withstand the harshest conditions.

However, the pack’s minimalist design may not suit everyone. Some hikers may prefer more padding or pocket options. Although they are available as an add-on, the lack of dedicated hipbelt pockets might be a drawback for some.

While the Arc Haul Ultra’s premium price reflects its high-end materials and unique ultralight construction, it offers excellent value for committed ounce-counters seeking top-tier performance. comfort

After putting the Zpacks Arc Haul Ultra to the test on the trail, we found it provides an impressive level of comfort for its minimalist design. We tested the Arc Haul Ultra with loads up to about 28.5 pounds and were pleased with how well it handled and transferred weight to the hips. The pack hugs close to your body, moving with you and eliminating annoying pack bounce.

One standout feature is the innovative curved carbon fiber frame and suspended netting. By creating an air gap between your back and the pack, heat can escape, and a breeze can flow, keeping your back noticeably drier. Anyone who has experienced the dreaded back sweat will appreciate this design.

The shoulder straps and hip belt offer moderate padding – enough to cushion without adding unnecessary bulk. However, during long days on the trail, we did notice some occasional rubbing on the lower back. The exterior frame elements with horizontal and vertical stays give this pack a stiffer feel.

All in all, for an ultralight pack designed to shave ounces, the Zpacks Arc Haul Ultra delivers decent comfort, especially for ounce-counters who appreciate a close-fitting, responsive carry. While it may not be the cushiest option, it balances support, breathability, and weight savings.

Functionality

The Arc Haul Ultra utilizes a simple yet effective organizational design. The main compartment closes with a traditional roll-top design and a single top strap with plenty of length.

The large front stretch pocket is made with a see-through mesh so you can easily see each piece of gear. The side pockets are large, secure, and easy to reach while wearing the pack, so you can hydrate on the go. The pack doesn’t come standard with hip belt pockets, but they are available from Zpacks as an add-on feature.

A unique feature of the Arc Haul Ultra is the non-stretchy exterior Dyneema straps. Each side has a strap that zig-zags up the entire length of the pack. On the bottom of the pack are two additional straps with line-loc adjustments, ideal for carrying wet gear, tents, or bulky foam sleeping pads.

Finally, the shoulder straps and hipbelt are stitched with continuous daisy chain webbing for attaching critical gear like GPS devices. Although the Arc Haul Ultra lacks a few organization features that come standard on other packs, most are available at Zpacks.

Water Resistance

When it comes to protecting your gear from the elements, the Arc Haul Ultra does not disappoint. In our water exposure test, the pack was virtually 100 percent waterproof and will likely stay that way for a long time. 

The pack’s main body is laminated with a waterproof backing, which creates a physical moisture barrier instead of a waterproof coating that wears off over time. The primary pack material, Ultra 100X fabric, has an impressive water resistance rating of over 20,000 mmH₂O.

To further enhance its weatherproofing, the Arc Haul Ultra’s seams and attachment points are meticulously taped, creating an impenetrable seal that prevents water from seeping through vulnerable points.

While no pack is completely submersible, this level of water resistance provides ample protection for most backpacking scenarios.

Construction

The Arc Haul Ultra achieves an impressive strength-to-weight ratio. The pack is one of the lightest we tested, weighing 0.4 ounces per liter of capacity, and still manages a durable 100-denier construction material throughout. This balance is thanks to the extremely lightweight and incredibly tear and abrasion-resistant properties of Ultra 100X fabric. 

If you were to tear this durable fabric somehow, the smooth surface is easy to repair with adhesive patches. Strategic reinforcements in high-stress areas, such as the shoulder straps and base, further contribute to the pack’s long-term durability.

The mesh on the front pocket of the pack has a 4mm hole diameter, which makes it see-through without compromising a lot of durability. It’s not as durable as Dyneema mesh used on some packs, but the holes are small enough to avoid most snagging or tearing hazards.

A minor gripe of the durable Ultra fabric is that it’s quite stiff, noisy, and crinkly. While certainly not a deal breaker, it’s something worth noting for anyone who is particular about fabric feel.

Should You Buy The Zpacks Arc Haul Ultra 60 Ultralight Backpack?

The Zpacks Arc Haul Ultra 60 is an exceptional choice for ultralight backpackers and thru-hikers who prioritize weight savings without compromising durability. Its thoughtfully designed feature set, including ample storage options, stable suspension, and reliable water resistance, caters to uber-ultralight backpackers tackling long-distance trails and challenging backcountry adventures.

Those new to ultralight backpacking or individuals who prefer more robust, heavily padded packs may find the Arc Haul Ultra’s minimalist design and streamlined feature set less appealing. 

Considering some features that come standard on other packs, such as hip belt pockets, are an additional cost for the Arc Haul Ultra, the price point is quite steep. However, it is a worthy investment for serious ultralighters who value Zpack’s premium materials, innovative construction, and niche market focus.

Casual backpackers or those on a tighter budget may find better value in more affordable, versatile options with a broader range of features and creature comforts.
