Bottom Line
The Burton GORE-TEX Gloves (men’s / women’s) are a reliable and affordable choice for staying warm and dry in winter conditions. Built with GORE-TEX technology, they provide great waterproofing and breathability, keeping your hands protected from snow and moisture. They’ve been in our lineup for a few years and continue to be one of the best winter gloves.
Thermacore insulation offers lightweight warmth without adding bulk and contains ninety-five percent recycled materials. The DRYRIDE 2-layer outer combined with GORE-TEX makes these waterproof and reliable in wet conditions.
The removable, touchscreen-compatible liner adds versatility, allowing you to text or operate devices without exposing your skin to the cold.
While testing these hiking, skiing, and backcountry ice skating, we loved the Burton’s lightweight construction but are left with questions about its long-term durability. Burton’s short fingers also make for an awkward fit that impacts dexterity. For the price, these are excellent gloves for someone getting into snowsports and needs a waterproof and reliable glove.
How We Tested
CleverHiker’s Alaska-based gear analyst, Miles Knotek, put the Burton GORE-TEX Gloves through the wringer both in the lab and out in the wild. For the lab test, he dunked the gloves in water for four minutes to see how long they could fend off moisture. Out in the field, Miles wore these gloves while hiking, skiing, and ice skating in variable weather and precipitation.

Comfort & Dexterity
Burton GORE-TEX Gloves aren’t designed to be super dextrous. They have some flexibility enough to accomplish simple tasks like tightening down a ski boot, but that’s about it.
Because Burton focused the design on warmth and waterproofing, more minute movements like opening pockets and handling zippers are challenging while wearing this pair.
Compared to other favorites, the fit of these gloves is somewhat awkward and slightly restrictive if you’re trying to use your fingers individually. The finger lengths are slightly off, too long on some and too short on others.
However, a major pro of these gloves is their touchscreen compatibility through the shells. While not dexterous enough for texting, they are good enough for a few taps to make a call.
Handling smaller items was also challenging because of slipping between the shell and inner insulation. The two layers do not seem well connected. This was especially noticeable when handling small objects as the two layers could be felt slipping against each other. Pulling the gloves off would sometimes cause a small bunch of the layers against each other.
While these gloves are not the ones to choose for work or activities requiring fine motor skills, they provide enough dexterity for most winter sports and activities.
Warmth
The Burton GORE-TEX Gloves provide moderate warmth, further enhanced by their included removable liner, making them versatile for various weather conditions. Without the liners in the gloves, we were comfortable down to approximately twenty degrees. Adding the liners brought a few more degrees of warmth, but not enough to justify the lack of dexterity. A pocket on the back of the hands is a perfect spot to store hand warmers, as they will be needed while wearing these gloves in temperatures lower than fifteen degrees.
While these are not our first choice for cold weather, the included liner adds versatility for warmer days and protection on cold ones. The liner is warm enough to be used for aerobic activities on milder days. It is also perfect for cold days when removing the gloves to perform tasks requiring more dexterity. For their price, the Burton provides reasonable warmth and is enough for most winter temperatures.
Moisture Control
The Burton GORE-TEX Gloves are extremely breathable thanks to their GORE-TEX insert and DRYRIDE 2-layer shell. Exerting ourselves in these never felt clammy or overly wet due to sweat.
We love the option of using the shells as a standalone glove or the liners separately. It makes them ideal for scenarios like a high-effort uphill hike, followed by a lower output descent or summit hangout where you want more warmth and protection.
While their warmth and weight mean that you probably won’t be taking these gloves for a run or cross-country ski, they provide excellent breathability for hiking and snowsports.
Weather Resistance
We were pleasantly surprised with the weather resistance of the Burton GORE-TEX gloves both in the field and in our submersion test. When out in the field, we had no moisture penetrate the material keeping us safe, warm, and dry the entire time spent ice skating, skiing, and hiking in them. The GORE-TEX insert combined with the DRYRIDE 2-layer shell provides excellent water resistance at an attainable price.
We put these to the test in our four-minute submersion test and they remained dry for the entire time. Not a single drop entered through the material to the skin. When removing the gloves from the water, it was evident that the material had absorbed water, but none of it penetrated all the way through. The slightly shorter cuff on these gloves means that snow and water can entire a little more easily through the opening, but that is easily fixed by its secure cinches.
Durability
During our field testing, we experienced no ripping, snagging, or tearing of the glove’s materials. However, the materials used feel a lot thinner than other gloves tested. The polyurethane palms provide great grip but feel noticeably thinner than other polyurethane gloves.
After a day spent exploring the swamps and marshes of South Central Alaska by ice skate, where grabbing grass, tree branches, and brush was common, the palms showed several scratches and abrasions. None of these penetrated the material and all seemed surface level, but they showed this kind of wear after only a couple of hours of use. This is much quicker than other gloves tested. For most winter sports without frequent contact with brush and abrasions, the Burtons will hold up well throughout the season.
Should You Buy the Burton GORE-TEX gloves?
The Burton GORE-TEX Gloves are an excellently priced, high-performing winter glove, perfect for someone new to winter sports. While they don’t provide warmth for temperatures below fifteen degrees, they will be more than adequate for most winter temperatures encountered.
Their removable liner adds a little more warmth and is a great standalone option for high-output activities in more moderate temperatures. The GORE-TEX protection provides great weather resistance and is fully waterproof for wet winter days. The same construction allows them to breathe well and is perfect for your next arduous winter hike. While their dexterity is somewhat lacking, these are great gloves for the price and are versatile enough for a variety of winter sports.
