The Front Utility Pack Accessory from ZPacks (FUPA) is ultralight and ultra-tough. While the FUPA may have a jokey name, it is a serious fanny pack. Removing the hip belt nearly cuts the weight in half, and the unique fixed buckle placement allows for seamless integration into Zpacks branded backpacks. You may have double the buckles if you use a different brand pack. Due to the belt attachment being toward the top of the bag, the fit can feel a bit clumsy when fully loaded.
A longtime favorite brand of thru-hikers for a reason, the FUPA by Zpacks was the clear winner when it came to waterproofness and durability. The main pack is spacious, with more height than many other packs in the lineup. The FUPA has an internal mesh pocket for some degree of organization and an exterior open stash pocket for often-used items. ZPacks website states this back pocket was designed for phones, but my phone (Samsung S24 + Otterbox) couldn’t fit.
The FUPA is an ideal accessory for hikers focused on base weight and longevity. For aesthetics and comfort, it’s better to look at other designs.

If you’re a hiker looking for some hands-free storage, Thrupack’s Summit Bum bag is a great choice. 2.5L of easily accessible goods while only adding an extra 3-4oz to your base weight would be tempting for many.
The pack looks heavier than it is due to its brick shape and tough material, but it weighs surprisingly light on the scale. It has a relatively thin strap, which can become uncomfortable with heavy loads. If you’re taking this pack on a day hike or want more control around where it sits while wearing a larger backpack, the Comfy Strap™ – Thrupack™ lives up to its name at 2” thick and made from stretchy material.
Of the fanny packs that integrate into larger backpack systems, Summit Bum was the most straightforward. There is no mechanism firmly attaching the hip belt; it just threads through a padded sleeve, which makes it easy to thread in a different belt or attach to a backpack.
This simplicity does have its drawbacks. Because a sleeve attaches the belt, the pack slides around too easily. This renders it awkward and uncomfortable when worn as a shoulder sling bag.

How We Test
Through both field use and controlled tests, we put these fanny packs through the wringer. We hiked through Idaho, Tennessee, and Missouri, allowing us to use these packs in various environments. While testing, we focused on each pack’s comfort, durability, specific features, and organization. We performed targeted abrasion and waterproof testing and observed how easy the packs were to clean.
COMFORT
Comfort is a crucial aspect of something you’ll be wearing. Padding and other features can help, but at the end of the day, the design lends the most to comfort.
We looked at wearability, ensuring that each pack was loaded and worn for at least 3 hours, assessing weight distribution and pack stability. Each pack was filled to determine if it caused strain or discomfort.
The final piece of the comfort metric was adjustability and versatile wear options. Using a sewing tape measure, each pack was sized with its belt at full extension and cinched tightest, and it was noted if they had particularly wide or skinny waist straps.
DURABILITY
When purchasing new gear, you want to know how long it will last. While some folks baby their gear for decades, others are hard on stuff and only make it through a few seasons.
Material quality is a big part of how durable the product will be over time. To assess material quality, we performed a targeted test using 180-grit sandpaper on a 1” taped-off section of the fanny packs. After 10 strokes with the sandpaper, the tape was removed to compare wear with the rest of the material.
For the cleaning test, each pack was rubbed for 5 seconds in the dirt or other organic substance and then attempted to clean with warm water and soap. Both of these metrics heavily influence how long you’ll be able to use your gear.
FEATURES
These fanny packs run the gamut from pared-down simplicity to the latest and greatest designs.
Water resistance was high on the list, with many packs sporting weatherproof zippers and taped seams. To test this, each pack was filled with paper towels and then sprayed lightly with a hose to simulate hiking in the rain. The paper towels were checked to see how much moisture had gotten inside before dunking each pack full underwater and assessing it again.
The final piece was monitoring how long each pack took to dry. Other notable features included the presence of bottle holders, the ability to integrate into larger backpack systems, whether any quick-access pockets were present, and whether the pack included a key clip.
ORGANIZATION
While some people don’t mind digging through their bags to find what they need (inevitably buried at the bottom), others relish the process of packing and enjoy the challenge of finding the perfect spot for each item. From simple single-compartment designs to packs with more pockets than you could ever fill, there’s a fanny pack for everyone.
We took the time to evaluate each pack carefully, noting the number and type of storage pockets available, and assessed their practicality through field testing. During these tests, we packed a variety of items and observed how easy it was to retrieve them when needed.
